Was reading last night the late Francis "Kiko" Magalona's multiply site "Happy Battle" which chronicled his ordeal with leukemia. As I was reading his online diary about his battle with the Big C, I was amazed on how strong he was and how he dealt with it. I was also surprised as to how he faced the "enemy" and researched about what it does to his body. He even took pictures of himself with all the hematoma and phlebitis he had. I myself learned a lot about leukemia through his blog.
But one of his entries really struck me as he praised the nurses as his heroes. His November 8, 2008 entry reads:
"There's a plethora of heroes onscreen nowadays. From the comic book superheroes like Spiderman, Batman, Iron Man and even the Hulk, to the television series HEROES that has become widely popular worldwide.
But what about the everyday heroes like registered nurses? These people work day and night, round the clock to care for us. It's not just a profession, it takes a certain pride for them to know their craft, know their patient's condition and be in control when push comes to shove.
I have observed first hand how dedicated they are and along the way, I have forged friendships with them these past 4 months. These are the true HEROES for me."
He also added in one of his reader's comments:
"... Nakangiti sila pero huwag ka, alam ko yung stress na dinaranas nila, maraming drama sa ospital, pero sige lang ng sige. Ako puro ako tattoo, pero sa totoo, takot ako sa karayom ng ineksiyon. Hindi ko kay(a) maging RN...iba sila. =)"
Truly, nursing is a selfless and noble profession and words like these from people like Francis gives us, nurses, the strength to serve others.
Thanks FM for the wonderful lessons and words.
