No, it's not Erap and I think it's not even noteworthy to be excited about his efforts to resuscitate his political life.
If you grew up in the 80's and remember those days when the Araneta Center was the IN thing for Filipino families during weekends: rollercoaster rides at Fiesta Carnival, movie-watching at the New Frontier Theater, shopping at Rustan's or Ali Mall, Christmas display watching at C.O.D. or school opening shopping at SM Cubao. Then I guess you'll remember Coney Island Ice Cream.
I recall our visit to this store near Rustan's after a Sunday afternoon of strolling with my parents or my favorite Tita or Tito. Coney Island's distinctive signage of blue, red, white, a carousel and balloons can't be missed.
I could only remember my favorite which was Bubblegum flavored ice cream which has its distinctive tutti-frutti sweetness in it. There are other flavors like Chocolate Pecan Nut, Blueberry Cordial, Cherry Cordial, Eskimo Roll, New York! New York!, Pistachio, Mint Chocolate Chip among the 32 flavors available. It was just hmmmm...yummmy.
After several years of business mergers and face lifts, Coney Island All-American Ice Cream closed shop. But now, it is staging a comeback in the ice cream business with the same Trillana-De Ocampo families which owned Coney Island and Sorbetero way back in mid-70s. Now Coney Island will join their 'Go Nuts Donuts' family and shall be known as 'Go Nuts Ice Cream'. I am not exactly sure which flavors will be back but I think Bubblegum will be back starting tomorrow, November 2.
I am sure kids of my generation will troop to the 'Go Nuts Donuts' at SM Makati soon as word goes around and hopefully relive pre-Häagen-Dazs ice cream memories of their childhood.
